The article “The Four Social Revolutions” from Sociology (Boundless) outlines how four transformative shifts reshaped human societies. The domestication revolution (circa 10,000 BCE) transitioned hunter-gatherers to settled farming communities, enabling surplus production and population growth. The agricultural revolution (circa 3,000 BCE) introduced advanced tools and irrigation, boosting food yields, urbanisation, and social hierarchies. The industrial revolution (late 18th century) mechanised production with steam and later electricity, driving mass manufacturing, urban expansion, and class divisions, though it increased inequality. Finally, the information revolution (late 20th century) leveraged computers and the internet, globalising communication, automating labour, and creating a knowledge-based economy, while raising privacy and equity concerns. Each revolution fundamentally altered social structures, economies, and lifestyles, progressively accelerating technological and cultural change.
