The study, published in Neurobiology of Aging (2006), investigates the relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by examining cognitive function and H. pylori seropositivity in elderly patients. The researchers assessed 53 AD patients, 47 with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 48 healthy controls, testing for anti-H. pylori IgG antibodies. Results showed significantly higher H. pylori seropositivity in AD (88.7%) and MCI (87.2%) groups compared to controls (66.7%). In AD patients, higher H. pylori antibody levels correlated with worse Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores, indicating poorer cognitive performance. The study suggests that chronic H. pylori infection may contribute to AD progression, possibly via systemic inflammation, vascular damage, or immune-mediated mechanisms. While not proving causation, the findings support the hypothesis that H. pylori could be a risk factor for cognitive decline. The authors recommend further longitudinal studies to clarify this association and explore whether H. pylori eradication might mitigate AD risk or progression. This research highlights a potential infectious component in AD etiology.
