Titel på undersøgelse:

Impact of Sleep Debt on Metabolic and Endocrine Function.

Forfattere: Spiegel, Karine, Rachel Leproult, and Eve Van Cauter.

Chronic sleep debt, increasingly prevalent in developed countries and previously thought to be harmless, was investigated for its effects on metabolic and endocrine functions in a study of 11 young men whose time in bed was restricted to 4 hours per night for 6 nights, compared to a recovery period allowing 12 hours in bed per night for 6 nights. The results showed that in the sleep-debt condition, glucose tolerance was significantly reduced (p<0.02), thyrotropin concentrations were lower (p<0.01), evening cortisol levels were elevated (p=0.0001), and sympathetic nervous system activity was heightened (p<0.02) compared to the fully rested state. These findings indicate that sleep debt adversely affects carbohydrate metabolism and endocrine function, with effects resembling those of normal aging, suggesting that it may exacerbate age-related chronic disorders.
