Gender differences in the prevalence of mental illnesses are well-documented in psychiatric research, with variations in prevalence, symptoms, risk factors, and disease progression. However, research into the underlying causes of these observed gender differences remains limited, meaning that treatment for mental illnesses can only to a limited extent account for potential gender-specific variations within a given condition. Consequently, there is a need for more knowledge about gender differences in the causes of mental illnesses. In summary, this chapter shows that more women than men are diagnosed with mental illnesses—approximately 63,600 women and nearly 50,000 men were treated in psychiatric care in Denmark in 2022. Over the past decade, the proportion of both women and men with mental illness or self-reported poor mental health has increased. Women more often experience eating disorders, depression, and anxiety, while men more frequently have autism diagnoses and substance use disorders. Men die by suicide nearly three times as often as women.
