This study aims to evaluate whether compulsive sexual behavior (CSB) should be classified as a non-substance or ‘behavioral’ addiction by reviewing evidence across multiple domains, including epidemiological, phenomenological, clinical, and biological data, and comparing these findings with data from substance and gambling addictions. The analysis reveals overlapping features between CSB and substance use disorders, such as shared neurotransmitter systems that may underpin both conditions, while recent neuroimaging studies further highlight similarities in craving and attentional biases. Additionally, the review notes that pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments effective for substance addictions may also apply to CSB, suggesting potential parallels in management approaches; however, significant knowledge gaps persist, particularly in understanding the mechanisms and breadth of CSB. Despite an increasing body of research linking CSB to substance addictions, the authors conclude that these unresolved gaps complicate efforts to definitively classify CSB as an addiction, underscoring the need for further investigation to refine its nosological status.
