This study systematically investigated the link between problematic social media use and mental health issues in adolescents and young adults, hypothesizing that excessive engagement with social media heightens the risk of mental health problems. Through a comprehensive review involving 18 studies and 9269 participants, sourced from databases like Engineering Village, Psycinfo, Pubmed, and Web of Science, the meta-analysis revealed moderate yet significant correlations between problematic social media use and increased symptoms of depression (r=0.273, P<.001), anxiety (r=0.348, P<.001), and stress (r=0.313, P<.001). These findings were consistent across different ages, genders, and publication years, showing no significant heterogeneity. The results reinforce the notion that a heavy screen-based lifestyle, particularly involving social media, may negatively impact mental well-being, urging further exploration into the mechanisms driving these associations.
