The purpose of this article is to examine the nature of social relationships among the citizens of classical Sparta, the Spartiates, and to further our understanding of their behaviour both as individuals and as a citizen body. Topics covered include: the Spartiate social order and way of life; the conflict of values within Spartan institutions; and the conflict of values within Spartiate behaviour.
