Sociobiology: The New Synthesis

Hele abstrakt på originalsprog:
In “Sociobiology: The New Synthesis,” E.O. Wilson examines the evolutionary basis of social behaviors across species, including certain self-destructive acts that can be seen as analogous to suicide. For example, he discusses how worker bees may sacrifice themselves when defending their hive, a behavior that, while fatal to the individual, benefits the colony’s survival. Wilson attributes such behaviors to the principles of kin selection and inclusive fitness, where the genetic success of relatives can justify individual self-sacrifice. However, Wilson does not extensively explore human suicide within this framework, leaving the application of sociobiological principles to human self-destructive behaviors largely unaddressed in this seminal work.
